The Beginning

December 21, 2017

Annulus has technically been in the works for almost 10 years. When I was pretty young, I spent a lot of time with my cousin (who in retrospect was probably a little too old to be hanging out with me). He lived with my family and I at the time and we always found ourselves bored. We decided to make a video about two guys living together. Of course, there wasn't much of a plot--we made it up as went. But that was the beginning. "Roommates" was where "Annulus" started.

Come several years later, I began to take video production and filmmaking more seriously. My brother-in-law and I wanted to make some sort of video series. I had showed by brother (in law) the 3 episode masterpiece just to laugh at how bad it was. We got to talking about it and had the idea to "reboot" it. We came up with a (poor excuse for a) plot and started filming. I think we filmed for a single day. We didn't even finish a single scene, but it was a really fun day. Several months went by, then years. We just didn't have the time for it, nor did we really take it that seriously.

I made my first "real" in 2015: "Intentions". Then "Risto and Jeff" in 2016. I knew I would be making another film in 2018, and started working on a new script. I had this idea involving cults, dungeons and dragons and a bunch of asshole people. I worked on that for awhile until I hit a wall. It had turned into a cliche story wrapped in a few jokes only I would think were funny. I decided to come up with something new for the summer.

I went through old scripts and notes I had left myself just to see if there was anything good. Boom. I found the old Roommates script, the Roommates reboot script, the Roommates reboot rewrite script, and the web-series bible I had come up with. I immediately knew that I could actually turn this into something halfway funny. I started taking parts I liked and setting them aside. I really just used them as scene ideas. There wasn't much plot still. In other words, if you were to look at the Annulus script and the first Roommates script, you wouldn't be able to tell they were the same thing.

After a few months of work, I had the first draft of the Annulus script.

I am beyond excited to begin production on this film. During my last few films, I've developed an excellent group of actors that can take my work and take it to the next level.
